Planning With Justice - Using Spatial Modelling to Incorporate Justice in Electricity Pricing

Published Nov 05, 2019

A case study for Tanzania

On November 22nd, professor Hisham Zerriffi  from UBC  presented a methodology to incorporate equity and justice in quantitative electrification planning at the 2019 Informs Annual Meeting . Diversification of electricity through expansion of off-grid or mini-grid solutions poses challenges for both affordability and fairness. The study examines cost-recovery price levels based on justice principles and location-specific subsidies for the case of Tanzania. The study draws on the Open Source Spatial Electrification Tool ( OnSSET ) and was led by Vikas Menghawi  in collaboration with researchers from  and World Resources Institute .
