2nd trandsboundary workshop on the nexus assessment of the North Western Sahara Aquifer System

The second and the final transboundary workshop for the nexus assessment of North Western Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS) was held in Hammamet in Tunisia between the 18th and 19th June 2019. The project that is lead by the Global Water Partnership Mediterranean (GWP-Med)  jointly with the Water Convention Secretariat serviced by UNECE , the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) ,  and the local ministries in Algeria, Libya and Tunisia.
Delegations of authorities and experts from the water, energy, agriculture and environmental fields discussed the findings of this nexus assessment that was launched two years ago in Algeirs. The discussions during this workshop were informed by intersectoral “nexus” solution packages that address the challenges in the agriculture, water, enery and ecosystems in NWSAS. , PhD candidate at , presented the the results of the GIS-based modelling developed to address key nexus questions in a quantitative manner. Furthermore, he presented the final findings realated to the the energy sector transformation in the NWSAS countries. These presentations (and others) served as inputs for the group discussions that elaborated on packages of multi-sectoral solutions and their possible implementation at national and transboundary levels.
