Are open source energy system optimization tools mature enough for serious use?
A new peer-reviewed paper by Markus Groissböck , University of Innsbruck , Austria, was published in the journal Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews (Elsevier). In the study, the author assesses the maturity of 31 mostly open source energy modelling tools according to 81 criteria and elaborates overall maturity scores for all. From the results, OSeMOSYS emerges to be one of the most mature tools currently available, together with TEMOA and the recently released pyPSA . The study also suggests that even the most mature tools be enhanced to allow for deeper study of the impact of ambient air conditions and part-load behaviours. According to the author, this may help highlight the opportunities and challenges of introducing high shares of renewable energy sources in energy systems.
