Energy Technology Department at KTH was very well-represented at the IEA Heat Pump Conference, held in the beautiful Hofburg Palace in Vienna from May 26th to 29th.

Just to mention a few highlights from a long list:

Björn Palm won the prestigious Rittinger International Heat Pump Award - the highest international honor in the heat pump, air conditioning, and refrigeration sector. Furthermore, Björn Palm, Hatef Madani, and Davide Rolando chaired several scientific sessions during the conference.

Görkem Balyaligil delivered a keynote on “Selection of natural refrigerants for heat pumps in district heating systems”. Samer Sawalha from Energy Technology Department at KTH and Ranjan Saha from Siemens Energy were the co-authors of the article.

Monika Ignatowicz shared highly interesting results on “Chemical stability of low GWP refrigerants with POE lubricants for high temperature heat pumps”. Her findings have significant implications for the selection of refrigerants in high-temperature systems.

Jafar Esmaeelian, who is doing his PhD on flammable refrigerants, detailed his results on “Experimental investigation of hydrocarbon refrigerant leakage under varying conditions”. Björn Palm, Rahmat Khodabandeh, and Hatef Madani were the co-authors of the paper.

Nelson Sommerfeldt gave a keynote speech on the techno-economic analysis of Solar PVT-assisted ground source heat pump systems. Mayra Castañeda Rodas, Maria Letizia Fasci, and Francisco Beltran were the co-authors.

Tianhao Xu led a keynote on Waste Heat Recovery Using A Miniaturized Heat Pump at Mobile Base Stations. Hatef Madani was the co-author of the work.

Lorenz Payonga spoke in the beautiful Zeremoniensaal room in the Hofburg Palace, discussing Heat Pump-enabled Building Flexibility Potential via Deep Reinforcement Learning and Trade-off Analysis. Hatef Madani co-authored this work.

Energy Technology Department, Division of Applied thermodynamics and Refrigeration at KTH is currently running a PhD program on heat pump systems together with the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, who hosted and organized this excellent conference. As part of this program, Pantheia Peikani gave a keynote on Performance Assessment of Natural Refrigerants in Heat Pumps for Micro-district Heating. Ellen Louise Nicholson demonstrated to the audience how Physics-Informed Neural Networks as Virtual Sensors can support Domestic Heat Pump systems.

The full list is much longer, but one short article can only cover so much of how Energy at KTH contributed to this well-attended event of over 800 participants. We are proud of our strong involvement and look forward to the next conference in Copenhagen in 2029.
