HPT researchers visit PSA-CIEMAT in Almería to explore solar energy innovations

Two weeks ago, researchers from the HPT division visited the PSA-CIEMAT Almería Solar Platform for a day of collaboration and knowledge exchange. The visit provided an opportunity to explore state-of-the-art facilities supporting the PRINCESS and DETECTIVE projects, which aim to advance point-focus and linear solar concentration technologies.
The KTH team toured key experimental facilities, including the CESA tower (Figure 1), the solar furnace (Figures 2 and 3), and the parabolic trough collector loop (Figure 4). The visit continued with a focus on thermal storage infrastructures, particularly the molten salt and CO₂ loop, which play a crucial role in improving energy storage and management. The team also visited the OPAC facilities, where solar thermal components undergo optical characterization and durability testing.
The tour was guided by PSA-CIEMAT experts (Arantxa Fernández, Daniel Sánchez, Diego Alarcón, and Margarita Rodríguez). The visiting HPT researchers — Rafael Guedez , Silvia Trevisan , and Salvatore Guccione — had the chance to engage with the latest solar technologies and research methods. This visit reinforced the importance of advanced facilities in developing sustainable energy solutions and strengthening collaborations in renewable energy research.
