ETT’s Anton Julin Wallén Named Ebbe Lyth Scholarship Winner 2025
The Ebbe Lyth Scholarship 2025 was announced on November 6th during KVP-dagen, where Anton Julin Wallén from ETT, Energy Technology, KTH received the University category award for his thesis on heat recovery in Swedish food retail stores.
On November 6th, the recipients of the Ebbe Lyth Scholarship 2025 were officially announced during KVP-dagen. The scholarship, established by Kylbranschens Samarbetsstiftelse (KYS), aims to promote high quality, safety, environmental responsibility, and professional competence in the Swedish refrigeration and heat pump sector.
Winner in the University/Higher Education Category:
Anton Julin Wallén – KTH Royal Institute of Technology
Supervised by: Samer Sawalha, Daniel Steuer, and Jaime Arias (ETT/KTH)
Anton received the award for his master’s thesis:
“Heat Recovery Potential in Swedish Food Retail Stores”
His work addresses a major knowledge gap in Sweden’s energy landscape. While we know that supermarkets generate significant amounts of excess heat, there has been a lack of robust studies quantifying this recovery potential and matching it to real, momentary heat demands.
Anton’s thesis demonstrates—through a rigorous and well-supported analysis—that 1.8 TWh of heat could be cost-effectively recovered annually from CO₂ refrigeration systems in Swedish food retail stores. This corresponds to a significant opportunity to:
-
Reduce overall energy consumption
-
Enhance system efficiency
-
Strengthen the sustainability of the Swedish energy system
His research provides a solid foundation for future policy, design, and implementation strategies that can help accelerate Sweden’s transition toward more energy-efficient and circular thermal systems.
While the spotlight today is on the KTH category, warm congratulations also go to Nellie Mikander, who received the Yrkeshögskola award for her important work on environmental, health, and safety risks of synthetic refrigerants.
Together, the winners exemplify the strong forward-thinking research that drive the industry forward.
