A GIS Approach to Electrification Planning in Afghanistan

Published Jul 18, 2018

In collaboration with the World Bank

KTH-dESA, in collaboration with the World Bank , has developed a modifiable least-cost electrification model for Afghanistan using the Open Source Spatial Electrification Tool ( OnSSET ). The model was accompanied by a database of geospatial information and a report providing insights to electrification strategies in Afghanistan. Additionally, two workshops were held for local GIS experts and stakeholders to train in using the tool and to discuss the results.

The geospatial least-cost electrification plan is part of the Afghanistan Energy Study , which aims to support the Government of Afghanistan to increase access to affordable and sustainable energy. The study provided valuable insights on how, among other things, off-grid technologies may significantly speed up the rate of electrification compared to a scenario focusing only on grid-extension.
