Fuel-price reform analysis for Saudi Arabia using OSeMOSYS

A new paper  on "Fuel-price reform to achieve climate and energy policy goals in Saudi Arabia: A multiple-scenario analysis." was recently published on assessing different power plant expansion plans for Saudi Arabia up to 2030, using a model based in OSeMOSYS with some enhanced functionalities. The paper investigates how different fuel price reforms might impact future investments in renewable energy sources (i.e. solar and wind) and related Greenhouse Gas emissions from the energy system. The enhanced version of the OSeMOSYS code that was used for this application included the features developed by Groissböck and Pickl (2016) to account for the effect that different ambient temperatures can have on the generation and related efficiency of power plants and to allow for multi-objective function considering both costs and emissions. Furthermore, the author of this paper also added inputs in the model allowing for the retirement of current technologies and a to set an upper limit for renewable energy penetration.
