Third workshop in Nicaragua

The third workshop on CLEWs was held in Managua, Nicaragua, in 16 -20 October; as a result of the ongoing partnership between UNDESA  and KTH-dESA. Participants from different governmental institutions, who have participated in previous CLEWs workshops of February and April, received advanced training on the CLEWs framework and on the use of OSeMOSYS in the representation of CLEWs systems using a single model tool.

Activities were focused on splitting the national model into regions defined by the nexus challenges in the country and also to capture differences in climate, crop cultivation, land use and use of water. Focus was also given to sugar sector, the representation of which was refined so to include co-generation in sugar mills and production of sugar. The training also included a presentation of the main findings of CLEWs analysis by participants from Nicaragua that also took part in the first CLEWs Summer School  (held in June 2017 in Trieste, Italy). The workshop was organised by UNDESA, the Ministerio de Hacienda y Credito Publico  (Ministry of Finance and Public Credit of Nicaragua), and included the participation of government officials from MHCP, INETER  (Nicaraguan Institute for Territorial Studies), Ministerio de Energia y Minas  (Ministry of Energy and Mines) and Banco Central de Nicaragua  (Central Bank of Nicaragua).
