Mauritian energy system model using OSeMOSYS

Published Jul 12, 2018

Scenarios were produced for future energy mix (2015 - 2035)

The availability of energy to cater for the growing demand is a constant challenge. Conventional energy sources are facing constraints like fluctuations in fossil fuel prices and political instability in petroleum producing countries. At the same time, there is a growing concern regarding climate change. Moreover, Energy security is of utmost importance for an island like Mauritius. Energy diversion from fossil fuels to renewable energy is no more a choice, but it becomes a necessity. Renewable energy is therefore viewed as one of the effective solutions. In this context, a model was developed for the Mauritian energy system and different scenarios were produced for future energy mix (2015 - 2035).
The Business As Usual (BAU) scenario analyses a situation where no investment in new technologies is made. Besides this, three scenarios were developed which investigated various combinations of RE penetration and Energy Efficiency (EE).
Based on the output from the model, it was found that up to 38% of renewable energy can be achieved. The increase in the share of renewable energy will undoubtedly ensure energy security in an island state.
