The four-week Summer School on Modelling Tools for Sustainable Development  is currently taking place at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)  in Trieste, Italy. Participants from 7 countries around the world came to Italy, supported by, and including: ICTP, UNDP, DFID, WASCAL, NFSC, IUGG, UNECA, IEK-STE, University of Costa Rica, University of Brasilia, The World Bank, Cambridge University. They are being trained to set up an energy system model of their country in OSeMOSYS. Additionally, the participants are introduced to the use of the Climate-, Land-, Energy- and Water-systems (CLEWs) framework. A number of the students will go on to represent selected CLEWs  dynamics in their energy systems model. At the end of their training, they will present the outcomes of their work to government and political representatives from their countries, as a first step to start a communication channel between technical experts and policy makers to let the latter understanding the importance of such tools for long-term sustainable policy development. A parallel training event - primarily supported by the World Bank - is taking place at the same school, aiming to train 30 rural electrification experts from 10 countries in basic principles geo-spatial electrification analysis and the use of open source tools such as the Open Source Spacial Electrification Toolkit ( OnSSET ), Python and QGIS.
