National energy planning and policy support for the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals

The project aims to promote the use of quantitative analysis through open-source and robust energy modelling tools (OSeMOSYS, OnSSET) to inform directly sustainable development policy, Capacity building is a core element of the proposed tasks, in which open source modelling tools will be taught to individuals from identified institutions in the target countries (Afganistan, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone and Uganda) with teaching material being made available to all so as to build local capacity in energy planning and policy-making. National energy models are developed for each one of the aforementioned countries assisting to address key national energy challenges. In addition, the Summer School on modelling tools for sustainable development (ICPT, Trieste) as well as the Energy Modelling Platform for Africa 2019 (UCT, South Africa) are part of this project.

Funded by:

The Applied Research Programme on Energy for Economic Growth (EEG)  is led by Oxford Policy Management. The programme is funded by the UK Government, through UK Aid.

Time period:

2018 – 2019

Project partners:

OpTIMUS community, African Climate Policy Centre of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)

Background

Energy is a fundamental driver of economic growth. Several Sub-Saharan African countries are amongst the least developing economies in the world. A large proportion of the population in the region also lacks access to electricity and other modern energy services, while the individuals who have access face frequent outages. The increased energy demand for structural transformation, the rising population as well as the adverse impacts of climate change on the continent are some of the key aspects for strategic investments, technology use, financing and capacity building to exploit continent´s abundant renewable energy resource (wind, solar, hydropower) ensuring socio-economic development and environmental sustainability.
