Carbon dioxide heat pump for heating properties
The assignment is carried out to investigate the possibilities of using carbon dioxide heat pumps for heating, hot water production and comfort cooling in different types of buildings.
Background
To reduce climate impact, traditional refrigerants such as HFCs and HFOs will be phased out. Natural refrigerants will be used in heat pumps for heating various buildings.
The assignment is to investigate the possibilities and limitations of CO2 heat pump for heating, hot water production and comfort cooling in properties.
The purpose of the thesis is to gain an understanding of how the investment costs, construction of heat pump systems, operating costs, and control systems look like compared to heat pumps with HFCs or HFOs.
The assignment will provide in-depth knowledge of the applicable use of carbon dioxide heat pumps in buildings.

Project description
- The student will be able to choose direction of the investigation in a desired way, and thereafter form a project plan. Possible areas of investigation could be: Dynamic analysis of thermodynamics in a carbon dioxide heat pump working in a trans critical cycle, at varying load profile.
- Construction of internal circuit in a carbon dioxide heat pump.
- Swedish law, EU law and industry practice for installation of carbon dioxide heat pumps in differently classified rooms.
- Construction of heating and cooling systems with carbon dioxide heat pump.
- Control of carbon dioxide heat pump.
- Service and maintenance for carbon dioxide heat pumps.
- Prerequisites from the students
Students should have taken courses in applied thermodynamics. Students should have good knowledge of the structure and function of heat pumps. Ability to understand system construction of heating and cooling systems in buildings.
