Cold Thermal Energy Storage

The present project aims at achieving Sustainable Cooling in thermal comfort range with use of Phase Change Material (PCM) based Cold Thermal Energy Store (TES).

The goals of the project are to
- find new materials adapted for indoor comfort cooling,
- enhance the thermal storage/extraction rate through advanced heat exchanger design,
- improve storage capacity with novel storage technologies,
- optimize storage control strategy through real case studies,
- minimize subcooling,
- avoid phase separation,
- reduce cost of the store.
A prototype of 15kWh storage with 50kWh/m³ storage density will be commissioned and evaluated by the end of the project time frame. Techno-economical feasibility studies of various types of stores integrated to the built environment will also be carried out. In parallel, close collaboration with industrial partners and material development will be monitored and pushed forward. The project will be carried out in collaboration with industry and international expertise in the context of the IEA / ECES Annex 24 "Compact Thermal Energy Storage: Material Development and System Integration".
