Background

Treatment of flue gas condensate represents an important separation process in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incineration. Membrane technologies such as reverse osmosis (RO) are often employed as a treatment step. Even if RO technology is efficient and mature, alternatives that can lead to more robust performance, lower energy consumption, reduced environmental impact, and lower costs remain of interest. Membrane distillation (MD) is such an alternative. MD involves a heat-driven process and is thus ideal for integration with MSW incineration, and can achieve separation efficiencies superior to RO but with much lower electricity demand.

Aim and objectives

The purpose of this project is to investigate MD technology paired with acid stream quench for improved, cost-effective flue gas condensate treatment. Methods include experimental studies at laboratory and pilot scale, along with system analysis and optimization for techno-economic evaluations.
