OPM Ethiopia project “Energy system development pathways in Ethiopia”

The project “Energy system development pathways for Ethiopia” is being led by the University College of London (UCL) along with the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), the Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI) and Addis Ababa Institute of Technology (AAIT). The project is part of the Applied Research Programme on Energy for Economic Growth (EEG), led by Oxford Policy Management.

Funded by:

The Applied Research Programme on Energy for Economic Growth (EEG)  is led by Oxford Policy Management. The programme is funded by the UK Government, through UK Aid.

Time period:

December 2018 – December 2020

Project partners:

University College of London (UCL)

Royal Institute of Technology (KTH)

Ethiopian Development Research Institute (EDRI)

Addis Ababa Institute of Technology (AAIT)

This project uses the social science research output (qualitative scenarios for both supply and demand side defined via interviews, questionnaires, stakeholder workshop, and the development of institutional regulatory frameworks) to quantify the energy, economics and environmental impacts of energy system development pathways for Ehiopia using a set of energy system models. It will also ensure that the developed tools are available and appropriate for end-users, which will include training on the use of the developed models for research and policy.

Aim and objectives

This project aims to unlock barriers in the energy system planning process and policy analysis by developing energy system models that adopt an inclusive approach through stakeholder engagement.
