World Energy Outlook 2019

The International Energy Agency launched two publications including geospatial electrification analysis in 2019; the World Energy Outlook and the Africa Energy Outlook. These present comprehensive energy outlooks on both a regional and global level. KTH researchers provided a geospatial electrification analysis for the reports using OnSSET. The analysis includes two scenarios on a regional level for all of sub-Saharan Africa, and also provide a more detailed look on 11 countries; Angola, Cote d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania.

Background

The IEA published a Special Report on Africa in November 2019 as part of the World Energy Outlook (WEO) 2019 series. The Special Report is based on in-depth analysis quantitatively investigating today’s picture for access to modern energy, the strategies and technologies that can enable countries to achieve energy for all by 2030, and the ways in which reliable energy can move communities from poverty towards prosperity.

The IEA engaged KTH to carry out in-depth quantitative analysis and provide projections, results and assessments regarding Africa’s current energy situation and future trends, and electrification pathways, with country-level focus for key countries in the African region.

Aim and objectives

The objective of the analysis was to quantitatively investigate today’s global picture for access to modern energy, the strategies and technologies that can enable sub-Saharan African countries to achieve energy for all by 2030, and the ways in which reliable energy can move communities from poverty towards prosperity KTH. To do so, the Open Source Spatial Electrification Tool (OnSSET) was applied to analyze two scenarios for increased electricity access in sub-Saharan Africa.
